Building a transforming church starts by helping to create biblical community, and that begins with leaders. For many pastors, this is a whole new way to lead.
One of our clients was the senior pastor of the largest church in his denomination in the United States. He told us: “I used to feel that a management-driven church was the best style to adopt. I hired staff to oversee the various ministries and groups in the church, and I managed the staff. In this way I didn’t pursue change; I managed the status quo.. But the more I managed the further removed I became from the spiritual community of our church. I realized that I needed to lead rather than manage”.
And he soon realized that he couldn’t lead alone. The leaders of transforming churches are collaborators. They know they need the gifts and resources and passions of a whole and diverse team.
Leading a transforming church is beyond the scope of any one leader, no matter how gifted. It is a never-ending, collaborative work. Instead of coming up with the right answers, the leader is the one who begins to frame the right questions and invites others to join the process.
Leaders of transforming churches are incredibly intentional about building their teams – about becoming stewards of their leaders and their talents.
We think naturally of financial resources when it comes to stewardship. But a steward is one who manages ALL the resources of an owner wisely and well. There are no more valuable or precious resources in the church than people – who themselves make up the Body of Christ.
At Transforming Church, we are deeply committed to helping church leaders be wise, effective, and passionate stewards of the talents of their teams. Our Talent Stewardship process begins with a one day workshop which gives individuals and teams the tools to understand their personal and collective talents, a positive language to describe themselves and others, and a framework in which to use their talents to create success.
